How To Keep Your Hardwood Floors Looking Great

By Rob Terry

There are many precautions that should be taken when there are hardwood floors in the home, in order to preserve their pristine condition. This type of flooring is highly popular given its superior durability and the fact that it is not a germ magnet like carpet tends to be. Preventing various forms of damage is not difficult to do and it will also help to lower the costs of maintenance.

In order to prevent scuffs, you should purchase covers for your movable furnishings so that these are not scratching or digging deep gouges into your floor each time they are moved. These can be purchased in a hardware store and can be very discreet. Small felt tips on the ends of your chairs will prevent a lot of aesthetic damage.

You can also gain a range of benefits by placing rugs in high traffic areas. These will increase the warmth in the property interior and could help people to avoid slips and falls. They can also trap gritty substances that might result in superficial dings.

Make a commitment to disallowing shoes in the home and place mats at every entrance and exist. This will prevent people from tracking in dirt and debris. Although small pebbles will not cause a major amount of damage to the floor surface, they will make it necessary to clean it a lot more frequently.

Avoid mopping your floor before you have vacuumed up all of the loose debris or swept it up. Pulling these things against the surface of the floor will have a negative impact on the surface. Getting these items up will take just a few seconds and taking the time to do this will increase the appearance of your home interior significantly.

Use a gentle solution of warm water and small bit of white vinegar to mop your hardwood floors when they really need it. Make certain to remove all excess water and to open your doors in order for the surface to dry. This should only be done on an as-needed basis, in order to limit the likelihood of water damage.
