Tips To Becoming An Avionic Repairs Technician

By Kathy Kaufman

If you want to become an avionics technician, you will first have to attend one of the 170 schools that have been certified by the FAA. Having completed the course of aircraft mechanic training, finding a good job should not be a problem. However, it will still be difficult to find opportunities in major airlines which have better terms and conditions of remuneration. If you study avionic repairs, be sure that there will be more opportunities especially in small and regional commuter airlines, as well as in FAA repair stations.

The main task of these experts is to see to it that at all times the airplane is able to perform at its peak. To achieve this, the experts will conduct scheduled repairs, inspecting aircrafts according to the FAA regulations and also making required repairs. Remember that an aircraft is a very complex machine, and a simple fault can cause macabre loss of lives.

The avionics electronic system is where most of these experts will work. The system is composed of all the instruments and also computers that direct engine, flight as well as other important functionalities of airplane, chiefly the communication and navigation of aircraft. These are very important systems insofar as airplane design is concerned. It is therefore the work of avionics technicians to see to it that this system is operational at all times.

As an avionics expert, expect to work either in hangers, airfields or in the repair stations. Your work will be to try and avoid flights from being rescheduled. This means you will have to work at odd hours. Although the average work-week is 40 hours, these people will not work from 9-5. Instead, there are 8-hour shifts.

To begin a journey in this career, first you have to be enrolled in one of 170 of Aviation maintenance Technician schools. The schools are FAA-certified. As a requirement, at least 1900 hours of study must be completed, and this may take between 2 and 4 years. There are certain schools which offer both 2-year and 4-year degree courses in aviation maintenance management, avionics and aviation technology.

Most schools are teaching their students about the newer technologies that are currently being used in the sector. Such modern technologies are aviation electronics and turbine engines. It means that an individual must be very good in computer as well as physics, mathematics, mechanical drawing and electronics. As part of their jobs, they will also be required to submit reports. Writing skills must also be learnt.

According to the FAA regulations, only certified technicians are allowed to repair airplanes. Also, a person working under a certified technician can repair it. Thus, employers prefer certified technicians to those that are not. Certifications can be the combined A&P, air frame mechanics or power plant mechanics.

It is mandatory to have worked for a minimum period of 18-30 months, in order that a person gets certified as a qualified avionic repairs expert. There are cases when students can complete FAA-approved programs while at school and get certified. The requirements are that besides formal training, a person must sit and pass exams. Getting certified is not enough; one has to maintain this certification by studying further.
