By Leslie Moore

Plastic is known to be a very versatile substance and it has benefited the lives of humans a lot. Different aspects of life have grown because of the existence of plastic. Science, medicine and different industries won't be as successful as they are right now if not because of the wonderful use of plastic. It has also played a big part when it comes to innovation of different kinds. After discussing about its many benefits, it won't escape the fact that plastic could be very harmful to the lives of people and environment for many ways.

Harmful Effects to Human Lives

Plastic can harm people of different ages that even the lives of innocent and angelic babies could be at risk. Small pieces of plastic which comes in the form of toys or plastic bags could be dangerous for small children. Kids under the age of three might swallow and be choked by the small parts of their plastic toys. Plastic bags can also suffocate them if they played with it and ended up having their heads trapped. It is important to watch over kids whenever they are playing with toys that are made up of plastics.

Chemicals in the plastic have bad effects to the human health. BPA and phthalates can lower testosterone levels on males and induce fast and early puberty on girls. You can get an allergy upon contact with plastic or you can also get poisoned if you have taken in or it large portions of chemicals were mixed with your food. Plastics also have carcinogens and it could cause cancer if consumed in large amounts. Some things that contains amount of bad chemicals are toys, vinyl, plastic bottles and shower curtains.

Harmful Effects to the Environment

When it comes to human waste, a huge percentage of it is plastic. As the usages of plastic products have become rampant, the environment had suffered a lot. Since it is not that easy to decompose, discarded plastic products are ending up being scattered on the streets, clogging the waterways and polluting other natural habitats. Animals who have mistaken plastics for food may die after consuming it due to poisoning.

Issues in landfill have been the problem of many governments. Since plastics have nowhere to go and it won't decompose that easily, landfills can be very full of it that in time, there will be not enough space for other kinds of wastes. From landfills, plastics and its chemicals might find its way to the water ways where we are getting our drinking water. This will cause contamination that people would have to stop from drinking the water coming from it until the root cause was found or you have moved to a different location.
