About Nasal Congestion

By David Belling

There will be times when you'll just wish that you are experiencing stomach pain rather than having a clogged nose especially if you are having a hard time to sleep because of this. The breathing problem which is also known as nasal congestion could annoy people of different ages. If you have this kind of condition, it only means that you have swelling or irritated sinuses. Good thing is that there are ways on how you can relieve yourself from this inconvenience.

Causes of Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is produced by the irritation and swelling of the inner part of the nose. There are many reasons that explain why it is happening. The first to take the blame is humidity. Nasal membranes won't be able to produce enough mucous to lubricate the nose due to low humidity. If this happens, irritation and swelling may occur which will clog the nose. Birth defects and injuries can also cause congestions but this situation is rare.

Gravity can also affect the nasal activities and it plays its role mostly when you lay yourself down to doze off. While you are in a lying position, gravity pulls the sinuses draining the back of your throat and this causes the irritation. Effects of gravity on your sinuses can also be felt if you lay down on one side. This will cause your sinuses to be drained on that side which causes difficulty in breathing. An allergy is also a common cause of colds and stuffy noses. It could be an allergic reaction to the bedding, pillow or from the laundry detergent that has been used.

How to Treat a Clogged Nose?

Knowing the exact cause of nasal congestion may help on its treatment. Sleeping positions, surgery, cleanliness and medication can solve this problem. The first step is to know whether the condition is caused by a sickness. If it is, the most effective way to overcome it is by medications or treatments prescribed by the doctor. Decongestants, paracetamol and antihistamines are some of the medicines that you should take for nasal congestion relief.

Nasal sprays is another effective solution for clogged nose however, you should not use this for more than 3-4 days. Consult your doctor to know more about sprays and to see if this kind of treatment would suit you. Steam exposure with the help of eucalyptus leaves also provides relief to those who have this kind of breathing problem. You just need to boil some eucalyptus in water and inhale the vapour that's rising from it. Standing, different sleeping position and massaging the face can be used as a temporary treatment for this annoying kind of condition.
