Foods That Should Stay Out Of Your Small Fridge Freezer

By John Brown

While it may be tempting to put all your fruits and vegetables into your refrigerator, not all should go in. Below are the foods that you should keep in your pantry or on your counter, not in your fridge.

Apples

Leave apples on the counter, or alternatively, in a fruit bowl. If you realise that the apples have not been consumed after about 1 to 2 weeks since purchasing them, you can then decide to leave them in the fridge to preserve them a little longer.

Berries

These fruits taste their best whilst kept at room temperature, whereas colder temperatures can reduce its flavour. If the berries are going to be eaten very quickly, then leave it out of the fridge. It is not a bad idea to leave in the small fridge freezer as well if you require them to last a bit longer. Ensure that you clean them before eating them. However do not wash the berries before putting them in, since this can lead to mushy and moldy berries.

Garlic

Garlic does best when stored in a dry, cool area that is ventilated. Garlic cloves will last for a while in such conditions. Garlic that has had its head broken open needs to be used within 10 days.

Melons

Do not cut up your melons until you intend to eat them right away. To get the best flavour out of them, store them on top of your counter. Scientists have shown that when melons are store under these conditions, they retain more of their antioxidants and are thus healthier and more beneficial to you. Once you do cut them, store them in the fridge for 3 or 4 days.

Onions

The cold temperature of your refrigerator will cause your onions to turn mushy and moldy. Therefore, store your onions out of the light, in a well-ventilated area. If you cut an onion and have some left over, put the remaining onion into a resealable bag, then store it in the vegetable drawer in your fridge.

Potatoes

Just like onions and berries, the cold temperature will cause the potatoes to become unpleasant and grainy. Potatoes are best store in a dark, dry place.

Stone Fruit

Stone fruit do best when left on the counter to ripen. Only put them in the fridge if they are around for more than a few days.

Tomatoes

Refrigerating tomatoes will cause them to become mealy and dull tasting. If you want the best from your tomatoes store them on your counter.
